Matulaitis Nursing Home is founded and sponsored by the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and operated by Matulaitis Nursing Home, Inc.
Matulaitis Nursing Home is named after Blessed George Matulaitis, founder of the Sisters' Congregation. Archbishop George Matulaitis was a man who devoted his life to the work of God and service of His people, whose human dignity and precious individuality he continually emphasized.
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the BVM was founded on October 15, 1918 in Lithuania and has been engaged in the work of caring for the aged since 1919. The Sisters worked in various charitable organizations, social services, homes for the aged, hospitals and assisted the aged still living in the community. At the invitation of the Marian Fathers, five Sisters came to the United States in 1936 to work at Marianapolis, Thompson, CT. In 1942 they opened a Home for the Aged in Thompson, CT- Villa Maria. In the fall of 1943 the Sisters acquired a house on Route 21 in Putnam, and established a Convent which after became their Provincial House.
As the Villa Maria residents aged, their need for medical assistance increased. In response to the evolving needs of the elderly community, a license for Rest Home with Nursing Supervision was obtained in 1961.
Later, upon request of the elderly and Lithuanian community, the Sisters decided to build the Nursing Home in order to help the seriously ill and dying, thus caring for them till the end of their lives. Their special concern was for those who had no relatives, were new immigrants, abandoned, or had a language barrier and incapacity for acculturation. Matulaitis Nursing Home was opened on June 14, 1968.
