PUTNAM, CT – Matulaitis Nursing Home hosted a Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, June 26, 2010 for their newly built Rehabilitation Center named for Sister Aloysa Shaulis.
The Rehab Center has spacious rooms, most of which are private, each with a private bathroom and handicapped-accessible shower, and a few rooms are semi-private to accommodate couples, siblings and those that prefer a double room. Each room provides complete comfort for those undergoing rehabilitation. It is equipped with a flat screen TV, Wi-Fi service and completely new furnishings. A therapy center as well as a recreation room is located on the same floor providing a full spectrum of rehab services.
Sister Aloysa was a leader of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception for many years and initiated and oversaw the establishment of Matulaitis Nursing Home. She spent her last years serving in Pastoral Care at Matulaitis and brought joy and spiritual support to our residents.
The Dedication Ceremony started with the Blessing of the new Rehabilitation Center. It was followed by a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Bishop P. Baltakis, OFM, Rev. I. Sadauskas, Chaplain of Matulaitis Home, and Rev. A. Zygas. Mass was attended by Sisters, staff and guests that came to participate in this joyous event. They all toured the new Rehabilitation Center and enjoyed refreshments and social time in the afternoon.
On September 16, 2010, the official opening of the Rehab Center took place with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Guests from the greater Putnam community included Robert Viens, Mayor of Putnam, Shawn McNerney, Citizens National Bank Senior Vice President, Ric Rovero, Engineered Construction Building Contractor, Frederick Perkins, President of Board of Directors, and Dr. Jeffrey Howe, our Medical Director. Other Putnam area guests had the opportunity to see our new Rehabilitation Center and to learn about the services Matulaitis can provide.
Matulaitis Nursing Home is one of 18 nursing homes in America listed on the 2011 Honor Roll. “They were the only homes, out of more than 15,500 in the latest U.S. News Best Nursing Home rankings, to receive four straight quarters of perfect five-star ratings from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality care, the three areas in which CMS evaluates these facilities.”
To receive five stars in CMS rating, licensed nurses and certified aides had to provide more than four hours of care a day to each resident. State Surveyors evaluate health related complaints from residents, their families, and the public. They check for compliance from more than a 180 item-list, which covers such issues as residents’ rights, quality of life, medication management, safety of food preparation, infection control, fire safety, and others
Only two nursing homes in the State of Connecticut attained the Honor Roll designation in 2011 and one of them is Matulaitis Nursing Home.
excerpts from family of Bob Sadlier - Rehabilitation Patient
"We were impressed with the Rehabilitation Wing and Department. We were told that it was a new addition. How wonderful that you now offer this service to the community. . . so pleased with the facility and all the wonderful things you have done to help my brother.
excertps from Holly Edwards - wife of Hospice Patient
"The loving care all of you gave him was far beyond what either of us had experience at any medical facility. You treated him like he was family. Your love and attentiveness were like nothing we'd ever seen. And I'll never forget your kindness towards me, day after day. . . You comforted, gave peace and witnessed the miracle of God's loving arms, welcoming Walter home."
Words from Jeanne Dimmock - Rehabilitation Patient
"I was cared for by nursing staff as an individual and quickly established trust and freely expresssed my self concerns. Nurses Aides were skilled, knowledgeable, courteous, smiled and spoke to you in a sincere, respectful way. Meals were prepared with a variety of choices. The dining room was soothing and the order of service was such that you felt that you were truly dining out and not rushed. . . My room was always clean and staff friendly, smiling and polite."
